Consider a Summer Job for your Teenager

Do you have a strong work ethic? Wikipedia defines work ethic as "a set of values based on the moral virtues of hard work and diligence." Do you want your child to carry those virtues through their life and be a productive contributor to our society? How about financially to a future family? Of course, we all want this for our children.

I can remember receiving a strong work ethic from my work experiences as a teenager while working at a movie theatre. I learned to arrive on time, carry out the instructions of my supervisor and in return receive compensation for my work.

What a wonderful life lesson. Due to my family's instruction, I had to use those funds for 'things' I wanted to buy and so a work ethic was forged.

Providing the environment at home that 'channels' a teenager to work over the summer, "jump starts" this process. Think about it, a teenager has wants: iPods, cell phones, even a laptop. If they want those things, offer an opportunity to earn them.

Our work is not to be burdensome, but rather a learning experience. Maybe your child shows talent in writing, so consider a stationery store where printable thank you cards or personalized bookplates are offered. How about a gardening job over the summer, perhaps teaching educational gardening for kids. Matching their skill set with available summer jobs will lead to success.

So provide them with an opportunity to put their time and talents to use, nurturing those skills which they may want to use professionally in a work career. This will lead to a happier summer job experience and will begin forging a strong work ethic in your teen!
